Do you remember the 1984 fire? We've put together a timeline of the night lightning struck the cathedral 👇

At 2.30am on Monday 9 July, fire alarms ring out at the Minster, automatically alerting North Yorkshire Fire Services who dispatched a team to tackle the blaze.

There is a spring fayre in the cloisters today and the library has a second hand bookstall. The north cloister walk was rebuilt in the 1420's. The bosses on the ceiling show a fantastic series of angels and archangels holding blank shields.

The 14th-century Litlyngton Missal is one of the Abbey’s greatest treasures. The Latin manuscript contains the readings and prayers used at the celebration of the Mass, along with a calendar of festivals and saints’ days.

Janet Gough Thanks.
Yes, and I particularly loved that (when I visited) there were so few others around. I'm very happy to let the crowds flock to Florence (which is a great city, obvs) while I enjoy the wonders of Bologna, Parma and Ravenna in relative quiet!
