My latest essay—Everyday Monsoons—is out and illustrated by Sarah Kaizar in Distillations (Science History Institute). It’s an fairly experimental piece, a new kind of writing for me, so I’m thrilled for any and all feedback. sciencehistory.org/stories/magazi…

I don’t like that people in academia make their work inaccessible by not using plain everyday English. Over 50%of adults in America cannot read over a 4th grade level. You’re writing about certain groups and their spaces but they can’t understand your work. It’s also ableist.

I can hardly believe the day has come, but I'll be defending my dissertation this Friday (May 3rd) at 11 AM MDT. I'm excited to share all the work I've been doing on gene flow in island birds (and beyond)! Send me a message if you want a zoom link.

Excited for the pretty version of this primer on fitness to be out, led by Susana Wadgymar 🌿🔬 w co-authors Emily Josephs Megan DeMarche Jill T. Anderson. Partly motivated by the need for an intro text about how individual-level fitness is related to pop growth rate journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/72…

'Most grad students.. want a career at a research-intensive univ, but many botanists in academia are retiring w/o bring replaced by more botanists. Faculty expertise is misaligned w/needs of industry/gov employers, causing challenges to training grad students for those careers.'
