A door blows open in your mind when you learn about the suffix -le, it explains so much. People used to add it to verbs to mean ‘more than once’ or continuously—so originally, to ramble is to ‘roam’ on, to jostle is to joust repeatedly, and to sparkle is to emit lots of sparks.

I'm just reading some anti-alcohol policy papers — and some religious people turned up at the door! Coincidence?

I have been immersed in anti-alcohol policy papers and social media for five months now.

I am becoming a conspiracy theorist.

What this study actually found was that women who have three or more drinks a day have a higher risk than women who have 1-2 drinks. There were no teetotallers in the study to compare them to.

My pet peeve: 'interviews' that are just lists of questions where I am expected to write long and involved answers.

My second story is also out. Why will there never be a randomised control trial that settles the question of whether light/moderate drinking has health benefits?

I bought a flight to Boston to speak to researchers: winebusiness.com/wbm/article/28…

My story is finally out! It's long and complex, but the tl;dr is that the WHO is partnering with temperance groups to spread the anti-alcohol message: winebusiness.com/wbm/article/28…

I used to think investigative journalism was like spying, involving crawling air vents with tiny cameras. But actually, it's about being patient and doing a huge amount of Googling and listening to obscure podcasts. And reassuring contacts that you won't name them.

Two weeks ago I was at the Lifestyle, Diet, Wine & Health conference in Toledo, listening to some of the world's experts present on what we know (and don't know) about wine + health and whether 'no safe level' is true. I have done my best to summarise it: shorturl.at/drS17

Pity the poor American wine critics. They all got press releases about a new ApeVine Rosé: 'Every physical bottle of ApeVine wine is adorned with cutting-edge blockchain technology, cementing an unbreakable bond with its corresponding NFT on the blockchain.'

I went to the Wine + Health conference last week and this is the first report: winebusiness.com/news/article/2…

Greg Drescher from the Culinary Institute of A says if public health officials want to move people to healthier eating, they have to start talking about deliciousness.

What's coming out of the research very strongly is that the best way to reduce the risk of drinking alcohol, while reaping the benefits of wine, is to drink it in the context of the Mediterranean diet.

Oncologist Justus Apffelstaedt summarises the evidence about alcohol + cancer by saying he believes moderate alcohol consumption is fine.

Light to moderate drinking has very little impact on cancer risk. It's heavy drinking that has the impact. Justus Apffelstaedt
