This Cardinal does not look like he's in a good mood.

Four things I noticed while out in my garden: the honeysuckle was blooming, a yellow Iris, a gray catbird, & a Robin singing on my roof.

One thing I like to tell my students, especially before we go outside or on a field trip, is pay attention to see what you notice. I want you to notice at least 4 things. When we are back in class, I ask, 'What did you notice?' It's a good reminder to be present, to look, to see.

Yes, I wore the hat all day. Kids all over the school stopped to wish me happy birthday. Some gave me hugs. I was surprised by some who did or came up to me later, having made me cards in class. They weren't even my students but they told me: You care about me, so happy birthday.

My class has enjoyed trying to guess my age. At the low end was 26, so those are my favorite students, and, at the high end, 106. Not my favorites. Still,everyone gets a cupcake I brought for them.

'We turn not older with years but newer every day,' wrote Emily Dickinson. I came into work to find my desk covered in homemade cards from my students, balloons & the hat. Yes, I will be wearing it proudly all day.

Evening greetings from the garden

While I watered my plants this evening, I noticed the way the light from the setting sun came through one of my Irises, a ladybug on the leaf of a lamb's ear, the delicateness of a dandelion, & the chiaroscuro in the verdant foliage of the trees.

One of the best parts of my day today was a mom of one of my students told me, 'My son loves and looks up to you so much.'

And we got to see chickens on our field trip. I can't forget the chickens.
