Dunno why it never occurred to me but in Lord of the Rings right in the centre of this mythical medieval land of wizards, dragons, elves & Dwarfs there’s this incongruous 1930s English village where people wear tweed jackets, waistcoats, drink tea from kettles and own clocks.

‘the prevailing tenor of political and media debate has been to hector universities: “Behave like a market! No, not like that!” Time & again, governments have been astonished by the unintended – though widely predicted – consequences of their legislation.’ newstatesman.com/comment/2024/0…

The government is killing humanities in higher education. And in doing so gutting the entire sector. For no reason! But you know, great to see that concerted push back from all those brave, idealistic HE leaders across the UK really doing their bit to save our education system!

If you’re looking at universities with offspring, particularly if there is autism, adhd, dyslexia in the mix, please read their mitigating circumstances/extenuating circumstances policies in full, don’t just ask if reasonable adjustments apply.

Yep. And check, carefully, what evidence is required to support mitigating circumstances, and whether mitigating circumstances is the only way to access some adjustments, such as extensions. It will tell you a lot about attitudes towards disabled students/inclusion.

*Deeeep Sigh* Bridges between me and work are all in a serious state of decrepitude. Ouse Bridge is still squeezing traffic over it as though we’re the dregs at the end of a tube of toothpaste and now this. That’s it, I now live in my car!

We’re pretty much heading into a situation in which we have a generation of young people actively discouraged from accessing the same level of education as their parents, and with fewer options for any form of upward social mobility. And by design, none of this is an accident.
