#ACC24 marks the end of my term as inaugural Chair of the Diversity Committee. Together, we have made important strides in diversifying our specialty. 5 years ago, I founded my consulting firm Advancing Health Equity. 4 years ago, I made a leap of faith and left my career in academic medicine. I was scared. So scared, but I stayed the course. Today, I received a thank you note from the United Nations’s President of the General Assembly.

My 1st “Chair’s Clinical Conference” with Howard University Medicine Residents is a wrap! This is my time to be alone with them and walk through a case. I’ve been planning this since before I arrived! The goal: influence the development of these young Drs to uphold HU’s lofty mission.

Adding a medical school lecture on the impact of racism on health does NOT require you to delete a lecture on Biochemistry. Teaching physicians that living in a racist world increases one's risk of stroke, heart attack is NOT 'teaching discrimination.'
