Supposedly I’ve landed on a couple of Spotify Editorial playlists. I haven’t seen any jump in numbers yet but it gives me additional cause to keep going.

Bruce Swedien, Michael Jackson’s mix engineer … did 90some mixes of Billie Jean and that was back all in the all analog days. They settled on mix 2. Point being, for those who say, mix it and get on with it in the digital age … I think that’s a fallacy.

Man, I couldn’t care less about Kendrick and Drake. Seriously. The fact that it registers with my 13 year old leaves me that much more disillusioned that people find such news noteworthy in the least.

PreSonus PreSonus Studio One “mixtool” plugin is a recent game changer for me as a last plugin on my mix bus. I tend to mix quiet to get a nice balance but need to bring the level up. a A limiter does some wonky things when I increase the gain knob. Not so with “mixtool”.

My mix “checklist”:

1. Does it sound great?

The “4 dB rule” works well for me. If you think something might be too loud, back off by 4 dB. If it still sounds “loud enough, go another 4”. Once it seems “too quiet”, go up by 2, and so on.

The other day I told my 3 year old son to watch his step coming off of curb. I turned to my dad and said the same thing. It was a surreal moment.
