This is a pretty depressing but important article imho. Ive often thought that getting a job at dollar general might be a better bet for me than delusionally believing u can make a career out of an industry where profitability is based in extreme fame n luck.

Very sobering read: careers in music require a huge amount of optimistic self-belief, but the poor odds of success means its similar to gambling where optimism is dangerous. The effect on musicians: 'costly persistence and cruel optimism', a massive toll on mental health.

I had an odd idea to write a book about the places I grew up (Tuxford, Louth, Surrey & Norwich), family storytelling, and how these connected to rap music & ideas of truth & meaning. Now it's here
