Impoverishing Australians in their retirement by raiding their super is ideological claptrap. The housing “market” is distorted, broken and not fit for purpose. Bragg “changed his mind” after opposing using super for housing deposits. No explanation, just bad politics. #Insders

Thanks to ⁦Greg Jericho⁩ for digging up the ABS graph on the implications of Howard’s decision to make the CGT discount even more generous. Bad economics, even worse social implications. LNP have abandoned Australians who will never own a home. ALP should do more and fix it!

Greg Jericho article, a must read. Submissions by economists, individuals and welfare groups to the Everybody’s Home inquiry reinforced this analysis. Poverty, domestic violence and mental health problems related to housing costs. Bragg and LNP don’t care! theguardian.com/business/grogo…

I wish ⁦Bill Shorten⁩ well on his decision to retire. Despite our differences, Bill was good to work with and delivered a courageous, progressive policy agenda. We would be a better nation if the LNP/ Murdoch scare campaign had been defeated. theguardian.com/australia-news…

Thanks to the economic incompetence of the Howard govt selling our gas overseas for a song we are forced to import gas when we produce more than enough to meet our needs. The LNP failed the nation,we are paying a big price for their ideological stupidity. abc.net.au/news/2024-09-0…

My union,⁦The AMWU⁩ and its leader Steve Murphy is taking a principled stand by opposing the establishment of a breakaway group of blue collar unions. ⁦Sally McManus⁩ is a strong leader of the ACTU and knows criminals have no place in unions. abc.net.au/news/2024-09-0…

“Painful adjustment”, “sell your home” says the RBA. Ignores tax distortions that make mortgages and rent unaffordable for many Australians. People avoiding health care, missing meals, relying on food banks, borrowing from family and loan sharks. The pain is there now! #Insiders

Good to hear from Jim Chalmers MP that we are embarking on a strategic economic dialogue with our key economic partner China. It’s time we concentrated on economic engagement, sophisticated diplomacy and desist from capitulating to US paranoia by treating China as our enemy.

NDIS is not an “impost” on the budget. It’s an investment in building a good society, looking after vulnerable Australians and implementing Labor values. Should be more investment in nation building not less. #Insiders

Doug Cameron (@dougcameron51) 's Twitter Profile Photo

I agree with Sally McManus and the ACTU leadership. Sally explains the need for unions to oppose, confront and defeat criminal involvement in the building industry. There is no room for complacency, false outrage or turning a blind eye to extortion, kick backs and intimidation.

As if it’s not bad enough for Australians battling to afford their mortgage or rent the revelations on #4Corners shows that scams, breaches of the law by brokers, insurance companies and strata managers are widespread. The housing “market” is broken and not fit for purpose.

Doug Cameron (@dougcameron51) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Housing is a human right. Housing is unaffordable for millions. Governments must stop relying on a corrupted, distorted housing market that is increasingly about individual wealth creation as distinct from a human right and social good. Need tax reform and courage. #Q&A

Doug Cameron (@dougcameron51) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Sukkar was an ineffective housing minister in the Morrison government and did nothing to support Australians in mortgage and rental stress. He has a hide to criticise Labor when Howard’s CGT concessions lit a fire under house prices. #Q&A

Doug Cameron (@dougcameron51) 's Twitter Profile Photo

OMG I agree with Sukkar! Housing is the most important infrastructure. This is why I have argued housing should be in the infrastructure portfolio not in Treasury and Social Services who apply discredited neoliberal policies to housing.

Doug Cameron (@dougcameron51) 's Twitter Profile Photo

I’m sick of the scapegoating of migrants and international students to divert from successive governments relying on “the market” to house Australians. Abandoning govt responsibility to provide public and community housing and have a housing strategy has been a national disgrace.

Doug Cameron (@dougcameron51) 's Twitter Profile Photo

We had institutional investors in housing for years. They were called state and federal governments who created housing commissions and accepted the responsibility to provide a roof over peoples heads.

Doug Cameron (@dougcameron51) 's Twitter Profile Photo

No Susan it does not. However millions of Australians would love to have the security of public housing, not everyone can afford to buy a home in a distorted, corrupted housing market. Public housing used to be home to tradies, nurses, white collar workers. They were communities

Doug Cameron (@dougcameron51) 's Twitter Profile Photo

There are endless committees and forums of politicians and vested interests talking about housing. Everybody’s Home peoples commission recommended creating a Housing Advisory Council with people on it who are the victims of the broken housing market. They must be given a voice!

Doug Cameron (@dougcameron51) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Sure Clare O'Neil MP we would like more people to own their own home but concentrating on home ownership and treating renters as inferior to owners is unacceptable. Stop residualising public housing and return them to vibrant communities.

Typical rhetoric from the Minerals Council who want to deny mine workers the capacity to organise and bargain effectively. They want to exploit our resources, divide and conquer and make massive profits while deliberately circumventing workers rights. apple.news/A8UDo_mfaR3Ki5…
