My first time playing with Dall-E 3, trying to generate some concept art on a U.S. Navy crewed/uncrewed team at sea. Initial impressions are that the AI has a much better sense of what a drone looks like than an uncrewed surface vessel.

Terrible news. CMC was already doing 2 jobs because of Tuberville. Now acting CMC is doing 3 jobs. Incidentally, acting CNO is also doing 2 jobs because the lack of a Vice. The human and readiness costs of these holds fall to real people doing their best to do the nation's work.

My grandfather's great grandfather, also Joshua, was killed in a pogrom. His murder, like the 1,000 now, was near the High Holidays. I grew up with Holocaust survivors as teachers & congregants. The murder of Jews simply for being Jews is an ancient hatred--but we will endure.

Probably not. Build more frigates to defend the carriers Europe already has, extend air defense capabilities, invest in ASW, build logistics ships, improve magazine depths & stockpiles. There are myriad ways for the EU to spend its naval dollars better than on a European carrier.

I finally played Sebastian Bae, Gina Fiore, et al’s IUU fishing game. I was on the initial talks between The Pew Trusts & CNA about this 2+ years ago, then left for NAVEUR-NAVAF. What happened in between is phenomenal. Anyone working IUU and maritime security needs to try this.

I’m happy to share that I am starting a new role as CNA Scientific Analyst for the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, Plans, & Strategy (N3N5). I’m exciting to build on my prior embedded experiences advising CSG and numbered fleet commanders as I move to OPNAV.

This podcast underscores what I like most about CNA’s approach to research: direct observation. If you’re not there, you might be able to piece together what happened, but equally (if not more) compelling is what didn’t happen and why. Only local context gets you that insight.
