Don’t tell people with mental illness:

- “You’re faking it”
- “Can’t you just choose to be happy?”
- “Try and exercise”
- “Other people have it a lot worse”

Immediately saying these things instead of offering genuine support only reinforces the stigma surrounding mental health.

Depression can look like:
•isolating oneself
•laying in bed all day
•being visibly low/sad
•struggling to maintain hygiene/appearance

& ALSO look like:
•overcompensating with humour
•the ‘happy’ friend
•being social
•being active/high-functioning

Depression has no face.

Still so many people are afraid to talk about mental health and suicide. There is still a taboo around it. Please know that talking about it saves lives. We talk about breaking our arm, we understand when it is a physical illness, but when it comes to our brain people shy away.
