Maybe you thought US learned its lesson about ramming highways thru cities. Maybe you thought we were starting to get serious about climate change. Then you haven’t looked at PennDot’s study for rebuilding I-95 in Philly. I did & here’s my column: bit.ly/47KwHHH

In The @Guardian:

'New [European] cars have become so bloated that 1/2 are too wide to fit in parking spaces designed to the minimum on-street standards ... The average width of a new car [grew] 0.5 cm each year since 2001.'

New study examines ways to encourage sustainable package delivery.

Answer: Instead of telling people that that waiting is more sustainable, charge them extra for fast/next-day deliveries.

Another study shows that e-bike incentives spur more biking:

In NED: 'The incentive program has a positive impact on participants’ [cycling habits].'

'2/3 of the participants actually use the e-bike as much as they intended at the start of the program.'

Micromobility boosterism in the Financial Times:

'In cities at least, the e-car won’t be the vehicle of the future. I suspect it will keep falling further behind e-bikes, e-mopeds and e-scooters.'

Lowie Vermeersch, an ex-Ferrari designer now creating a microcar:

'Moving an 80-kilo person with 2.5 tonnes of material is not something we should consider as the best we can do, especially in an urban environment.'

He's right!

New paper finds bicyclists' 'subjective safety [is] a construct independent of objective safety.'

In other words, people biking often perceive safety in ways that street design evaluations do not capture.

Last year Ireland set a new record for transit ridership.

Passenger counts grew 25% from 2022 and were 5% above 2019 (pre-COVID). Story cites recent transit service expansions.

This new article by my MIT colleagues Jim Aloisi [email protected] and Bhuvan Atluri makes a very good point.

If EV incentives compel people to buy more cars -- rather than replace gas-powered cars w/ electric ones -- they'll be ineffective tools to fight climate change.

New paper suggests using the term 'cycle traffic', like 'car traffic':

'[By presenting] cycle mobility as 'cycle traffic' ... cycling and cyclists could be legitimized as a form of traffic as opposed to something ‘in the way’ of traffic.'
