When I see people, especially those who've never lived in the South, pretend that the North and West are promised lands for Black people, I'm reminded of my experiences living in most regions of this country. This quote and map from Chocolate Cities capture my lived experience.

You should be able to go wherever the you want. MS has the highest % of Black folks in the nation, what sense does it make for them to not be able to go to the flagship institution their taxes fund? Also wait till y’all find out how these right wing reps treat the HBCUs. 🙃

Exactly how many Black students do people think elite schools admit? The where are the Black people tweets regarding the protest seem confused. Trust me, I asked the same thing at Northwestern and I wasn’t talking about a protest.

Twitter is a decent space for sharing your take with the world. It is not a useful space for nuanced and serious dialogue because so many people are committed to misunderstanding anything that doesn’t align with their views.

Yo! Public Service Announcement to all my academic friends. We have to review manuscripts, y'all. You should be willing to review 3-5 papers for every paper you submit for publication. Editors are tired, in part b/c we keep saying no. We need better pacing, or a new system.

My first year on the TT someone told me to always have a talk or two ready at the beginning of the school year in case you get invited to speak about your research somewhere. Some of the best professional advice I’ve received. I wasn’t doing a lot of speaking then, but I am now.

I really made it through my first year on the tenure track. To borrow from Maya Angelou, I’d like to think I did so “with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”

I’m sure somebody has already written about the enormous cognitive load of intensive care work, but I think experiencing it has changed how I view what’s written about care policies.

Watch out world! Dr. Garry S. Mitchell has something to say, and I guarantee you want to listen. I've always been dazzled by his brilliance and I look forward to seeing how his voice shapes our field.
