I was HT of a school co-located with one of the first Surestart centres, potential was obvious then, and it's now backed by strong evidence. One of the most effective long-term investments that government can make, there should no longer be any debate about reinstating Surestart.

At their peak there were around 3000 sure start centres - a one stop shop for under 5s and parents - more than a thousand were closed in post 2020 austerity - others folded into other services. Now we have long term Institute for Fiscal Studies research that they paid for themselves
