The British Museum accepts £50m from BP. BM loses a deputy chair, endures sustained negative publicity (to cap off a tough year). But how did the BM arrive at this decision? The Art Newspaper looks into the board minutes & sequence of events theartnewspaper.com/2023/12/19/bri…

In addition to signing a new BP sponsorship, the British Museum appears to have resisted transparency and accountability, holding back 8 sets of Board minutes and rejecting requests for them.

Great digging by The Art Newspaper.

This is *why* we need an end to fossil fuel ads and sponsorships! 🗞️🛢️🏛️

They are designed and strategically placed in order to influence decision-makers. 🤝💰🏭

Great work by badvertising! 👇

The claim that Adani Green is somehow a standalone company separate from the coal projects of the Adani Group is robustly refuted in the thread below.

In fact, there are direct links between Adani Green and the Group’s coal extraction.

Equinor - sponsor of the Science Museum’s for children - has been held to account for its misleading green claims… 👀

Not a great look for a *science* museum to be partnering with such a firm.

The British Museum might think it's cleaning bp 's dirty oil money by taking this £50m donation.

But in reality they're whitewashing BP's reputation.

There is no 'clean' oil money.

BP should be funding climate reparations instead.

This, from the “Science Director” of the Science Museum, failing to join the dots between the fossil fuel extraction of museum sponsors BP, Equinor and coal producer Adani…and these more frequent forest fires… 🙄

Even a brief look at the Climate Action 100+ assessment of BP’s business would tell you that this ISN’T an appropriate or ethical sponsor for a museum.

How, and why, did the Board of the British Museum dismiss this clear evidence and sign a 10-YEAR sponsorship deal?!

Remembering Ahdaf Soueif’s powerful words in London Review of Books upon resigning from the British Museum Board in 2019 over, in part, the partnership with BP.

If only other Board members would now examine their conscience and follow her example.
