Keep following the path and soon Penn Wood is reached one of four conjoined woods owned and managed by the Woodland Trust. It has a significant bat population and the old quarries make it part of a regionally important geological site.

Pass through the gate and the Cotswold Way starts to drop down to a lower level, all the time shaded by these magnificent beech trees. Eventually the path will rise to reach Coaley Peak.

Here another Neolithic barrow can be seen but this has the chambered tomb exposed. In the third photo one of the marker posts can be seen.

The weather may be a bit thunderous this weekend, but here’s a little photo inspiration to get you thinking about your next walk around Bath. Autumn is a pretty stunning season, isn’t it? (Photo 1 Bathampton Meadows, photo 2 Bath Skyline, photo 3 Prior Park)
