American compassion has made a comeback.

In 2011, Dr. Sara Konrath and colleagues found that US college student's empathy had dropped from 1979-2009.

The fall was precipitous. In some cases, 2009 students reported being less empathic than 75% of students 30 years before.

Some good news for the new year: our newly published paper finds that empathic traits have been rising in American youth since 2008

This was due to concerns about their social belonging at university: Hiding this social identity resulted from concerns to fit in at university.
