Congrats to Illinois on becoming the 4th state to ban legacy admissions at all public institutions! It also banned preferences for donors. The votes to ban in both chambers were unanimous, as in VA and as in the CA assembly. Let the bills get a vote, CT, MA, and NY!!

Huge congrats to the Campaign for College Class Action and everyone else who worked so hard to push this bill this far. When legislatures are given the chance to vote on legacy bans, they pass.

The admit rate of legacies (41%) at Colgate is more than 3 times what it is for everyone else (13%, after you take out legacy applicants). But the NY legislature did not even get to vote on a bill to ban this practice this year.

Colleges funnel their students into a narrow band of corporate careers. Professor Amy Binder deemed this phenomenon "career funneling." Colleges aren't living up to their missions, and we're organizing students to do something about it.

Our student organizers spoke up and California lawmakers listened. “Elite” colleges have a long way to go, but this is a victory worth celebrating.

This comes as a victory for groups who opposed legacy admissions at Stanford, including Class Action. The Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) previously passed a resolution to support AB 1780. Read more in The Stanford Daily: stanforddaily.com/2024/05/16/ins…

That radical magazine The Economist is calling out the deep dangers that the the new artisotcracy poses to society. And yet Harvard University Princeton University Yale University Georgetown University and too many others cling to legacy preferences. No wonder people have run out of patience with elite universities.
