More ‘noticing’ adventures in Year 6. This time, using the brilliant Chris McGrane ‘Starting Points Maths’. It’s our first attempt but along with a bar model to prove, children are beginning to make connections between fractions of amounts.

Nat 5 Maths

A subtle tweak to standard deviation part b.

Always select the greater value for mean, and lower for standard deviation.

Statements are then always:
on average, more... AND, something...more consistent

Less options means less to get wrong.

Is there a peer reviewed paper showing a positive correlation of attainment versus volume/quality of whole class oral response questioning?

I understand the principles of good questioning. But does it *really* make a difference?

A remarkable article in Sunday Times on the Scottish curriculum.

When Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence was introduced in 2010, I was told repeatedly that its skills-based focus was superior to knowledge-rich approaches I & others supported.

13 years on & what do we see?

Controversial teaching opinion:

Questioning, in a whole class format, isn’t that important.

Techniques such as cold call are just ‘less bad’ than the relying on a handful of kids.

Instead, mini whiteboards or individual conversations are, most of the time, more effective

Do you call the kitchen worktop ‘the bunker’?

If so, were are you from?

Some Glaswegians don’t believe me.
