We spent an excellent day welcoming students from Durham University to their field course in the south of France. We packed a lot in: habitat tours, GPS use, camera trap deployment, plus plant and insect ID. Our highlight of the day was this male European Praying Mantis Guillaume Chomicki
Yesterday, our guests from Durham University spent a full day learning survey techniques, starting with a drone demonstration. Then into the meadows to investigate species area relationships in the insect and plant communities present. Guillaume Chomicki Durham BioSciences
Day 3 of our field course with Durham University was a trip to the Camargue. At the Scamandre nature reserve, we saw hundreds of invasive Black Bullhead Catfish, plus a wandering Red Swamp Crayfish. Then on to the Parc Ornithologique for saltmarshes and flamingos. Guillaume Chomicki Durham BioSciences
We took our visitors from @durham_unito the Causse Méjean, where we saw some interesting plants and insects, including these Leafy Spurge Hawkmoth caterpillars. We were then lucky enough to see a herd of Przewalski’s Horses, including a foal from this year. Guillaume Chomicki Durham BioSciences
While on the Causse Méjean with Durham University, we learned about vulture conservation at the Maison des Vautours, and managed to see all three species currently in the area: Eurasian Griffon Vultures, Cinereous Vultures and a very close Bearded Vulture. Guillaume Chomicki Durham BioSciences
