Much of the Godmersham Park Library collection was dispersed in the 20th century. In the last 5 years, Godmersham Lost Sheep Society: Reading with Austen have discovered and returned 13 books from the Godmersham Library to Chawton. This bee-keeping manual is their latest donation, now on display in the Library.

We're busy with final planning for our exhibition, Chawton in Stitches, which features the embroidery of Royal School of Needlework graduate Emily Barnett. We'll also have some lovely new merchandise on sale, designed by Emily. Chawton in Stitches opens on 13 May: shorturl.at/AEIZ8

On this day in 1633, the artist Mary Beale (née Cradock) was baptised. She was one of the most successful professional female portrait artists of her day, and her sitters included the writer Aphra Behn. The sitter in Chawton House's Mary Beale portrait has not been identified.
