Rommel Fernandez died in a car crash 31 years ago today. He was only the 2nd Panamanian to play in Europe. He played the 91/92 season for Valencia. His legacy is the 2nd major stadium in The Americas named after a Valencia player and an active Valencia supporters club in Panama.

Plus, real conversations overlap – people talk over each other all the time!

Early Nollywood films certainly had screenplays figured out compared to what we get these days.

Now, screenwriting.

Dialogue in Nollywood can sometimes feel stiff or out of place. Why is everyone speaking perfect English in every single scene?

It's unnatural, everyone sounds so formal, even in contexts when they shouldn't. And when local slang pops up, it feels forced.

This kind of editing is jarring & choppy, & causes us to forget that we are watching characters interacting contextually in a space & instead reminds us with each cut that one of Bimbo, or Timini is speaking.

Editing should help tell the story, not just show who's speaking.

Now, the editing - look at the scene OP quotes - see how it just jumps from face to face every time someone speaks?

It almost feels like the movie is having a seizure with that many random closeups and jump cuts in that one short scene, kilode?!

Then there's the lighting - I get that smaller budgets make picking cool locations or more expansive lighting harder, but expanding shooting times & using less artificial and more natural light could seriously upgrade the vibe of many films and make things feel way more real.

I get the sense that many Nollywood directors are technically skilled but can't quite communicate the feeling of the movie - essentially they are that friend who is great at taking photos but is a shit storyteller.

Okay, Nollywood fans, let's talk.

There's a ton of focus on overacting (rightly so in some instances), but there's WAY more holding the industry back imo: subpar direction, uninspired cinematography, rough editing, and weak screenwriting. 🧵

I always tell people. Nothing scares me quite like male jealousy. I avoid encountering it completely, as much as I can.
