Investigative reporter Joshua Vaughn from PennLive.com says that there are laws on the books about properly reporting the number of deaths in custody, however, they either have no enforcement mechanism or there fundamentally appears to be no desire to enforce the law #SenDemPolicy
So why HAS there been such a rise in deaths?
Honestly, 3500 words later I haven't found anyone with a clear answer. Even Carceral Ecologies's Nick Shapiro - who probs knows more about LA jail deaths than just about anyone - said he has resigned himself to not entirely knowing.
'Natural' deaths are up, but Nick Shapiro rightfully points out that these deaths are only 'natural' if you ignore the widespread neglect and abuse by LA County Sheriffs. Life saving interventions aren't happening, and even standard care isn't being provided.
