The government has forced council tax up by 38% since 2010 & cut annual funding to our area by £84m, meaning we are again faced with very tough decisions.

The challenges facing our education system go way beyond crumbling concrete - tight finances, SEND pressures, lack of mental health support…

I’m grateful to the 50+ headteachers from across Calderdale that came to the town hall today to hear how we are tackling these issues.

Despite todays release of a list of schools affected by crumbling concrete, we still do not have total clarity on whether any Calderdale schools are at risk. I have therefore written to the Secretary of State calling for answers.

It was a privilege to speak to support this motion last night and to draw on my previous experience as an ESOL teacher Calderdale College. I mentioned the Festival of Cultures Laura Lavender Mel Heaton and the importance of listening to the stories of refugees and asylum seekers.

People fleeing violence and persecution should be treated with compassion, supported and included. Last night Calderdale Council Council we passed a motion committing to becoming a local authority of sanctuary for refugees and asylum seekers. We proudly offer a warm welcome here.

Plans for the new Halifax Leisure Centre and Swimming Pool have moved a step closer.

Work on the plans has significantly reduced the total project costs bringing it close to the approved budget for the scheme.
