Chicago Teachers Union educator Viviana Ortiz is overwhelmed. As the only advocate for students experiencing homelessness at Cameron School in W. Humboldt Park, she supports 126 students — a workload that has dramatically increased w/the influx of migrant students. chalkbeat.org/chicago/2024/0…
Chicago Teachers Union is castigated for being in “petty fights” w/ lawmakers who REFUSE to fund our schools. When we say fund EBF it means bilingual edu, too. The 2019 strike was to secure bilingual supports. We *already* needed more—now we more and more. chalkbeat.org/chicago/2024/0…
Chicago Teachers Union is asking for more bilingual teachers, 100 percent of tuition costs for current teacher to get their bilingual certificates and a migrant coordinator in each school that enrolls new arrivals.+
70 years after Brown, our schools are still separate and unequal. When wealthy predominantly white districts have librarians and libraries but the vast majority of CPS - Chicago Public Schools do not, we still have work to do.
Love that Chicago Teachers Union members along with our Financial Secretary, Maria Moreno, ran into Governor JB Pritzker and we all agree that closing corporate tax loopholes is necessary to fund the schools and vital services all our students deserve.
