Hope is one of the things Jews are taught at an early age to value and to practice, as a tenet of life. As a people, we have lived through many times that seemed hopeless, and certainly, these last few weeks are another one of those times

Yes , we started the work after hearing the Holocaust wasn’t explicitly in our social studies curriculum, although taught by skilled teachers to many students in BC. With help from many partners, yourself & many Ed Ministers, our government has made this part of BC’s curriculum.

Learning about the Holocaust is not mandatory in BC.

That changes today, as Premier David Eby announced Holocaust education will be mandatory for all grade 10 students.

This morning, I sat down with families whose loved ones were kidnapped or murdered by Hamas during its terrorist attacks against Israel. I want to thank them for sharing their stories. While we cannot imagine your pain or your fear, we are here for you.

For BC’s Jewish community, recent days have been frightening. A significant rise in antisemitic incidents here in BC evokes painful memories. Combatting this kind of hate begins with learning from the darkest parts of our history, so the same horrors are never repeated.
