Very much looking forward to visiting Hong Kong next week, on Stefan Auer's invitation, to discuss decadence & technology in Jan Patočka's philosophy - & then Shanghai, on Bogna Konior's invitation, to think about Leibniz's I Ching & the origins of AI.

A great write-up by Zichen Wang on Professor Lan Xiaohuan's book on local government and economic growth, looks like it tells the story of land finance very well. I missed buying this when I was in China, shucks pekingnology.com/p/chinas-land-…

Jan Patočka is as relevant as ever imo & I am thus looking forward to the seminar I host at HKU next Tuesday: David Lloyd Dusenbury will discuss ‘Decadence and Technology’ based on his close reading of Patočka’s ‘Heretical Essays’. The respondent is ever brilliant Brian Wong

One should always work hard against the temptation deliberately to misconstrue another’s position so as to score a cheap shot against it. Even if you’re an academic.

1: Sorry, but Emanuel is really very naive about the region he is currently working in if he actually believes this is the end of the story. For one, the region is fragmented in many ways. It is not in Cold War-like bipolarity. carnegieendowment.org/2020/09/09/asi…

Many U.S. officials believe this, not recognizing that the Philippines is an outlier in Southeast Asia. In fact, the rest of the region is hedging, and tends to be quite critical of the path that Manila has chosen. The U.S. is losing the narrative battle in most of the region.

'Combating excess capacity' for 'protectionism'; 'de-risking' for 'de-coupling'; 'Indo-Pacific' for 'Asia-Pacific'; 'Strategic Rivalry' for 'Great Power Competition' - someone should write a paper on the 'New Era' lexicon in international relations discourse.

A great treat: taking a group of Schwarzman students for an informal discussion with Michael Pettis in his hutong in Beijing earlier today.

We covered everything from the risks of Chinese economic rebalancing to Beijing's faltering punk rock scene. Glorious.

Peking University may be a special case, but the number of foreign students in my classes has soared in the past year. That's a good thing. American and other foreign students should definitely consider spending some time here.

I spoke with Adam Minter about The New China Playbook, and why cultural misunderstandings are making it harder to manage China’s rise and avoid future conflict.  bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

Our Director John Tasioulas speaking on the regulation of AI at Szkoła Główna Mikołaja Kopernika Futurist Of The Year today: AI regulation must be grounded in a plurality of values; these values need to be translated into regulation via democratic processes; universities have a key role to play.
