Awesome! I fully expect to add passages in here to the syllabus for next semester! Last time I taught, I'd start each class asking if anyone had reflections on how current events related to the existence of the racial wealth gap & students often shared Kyla Scanlon's short videos.

I look forward to our various news outlets exercising more responsible coverage and generally being better on this and similar issues going forward. We don't need any false panic ginned up that has the major potential to ruin innocent lives through reactionary and harmful policy.

To summarize:
- sensational headlines will lead to bad 'tough on crime' policy asks
- spinning isolated incidents into a narrative of 'out of control teens' triggers moral panic, not thoughtful policy response
- crowds and fights are not new, and crime is still down long-term

At a minimum, the sheer amount of misinformation & lack of clarity around what the OPRA bill does or doesnโ€™t do requires us to reconsider it.

No one is saying OPRA shouldnโ€™t be modernized. But clearly, this bill doesnโ€™t do it, and even lawmakers are unclear about what it does.

One of the greatest joys of my time working at CBPP was getting to work with Peggy Bailey (@peggybaileydc.bsky.social). I'm thrilled that her work and vision are highlighted in this piece and sincerely hope everyone takes the time to read it.
