Distractions! As people die, govt keeps talking “Re-criminalization and treatment, get the help you need”.
We need: 1)regulated supply, 2) housing, 3) real decriminalization, 4) appropriate health services. Death &injury WILL decline.

Great thread by Carolina, echoing the themes of a new report by homeless survivors found here: ahomeforall.ca/new-report-hom…

The CRD will soon approve a new community plan to end homelessness and we need to see a clearer commitment to Housing First, not shelter first.

Community-controlled harm reduction is successful. Not cos PWUD are “hard to reach” or need a push to care about our health. But cos we have the skills attitude & heart to work with our people who know trauma, those stung by stigma & discrimination, those put in the too-hard basket

Great story by CBC about The Housing Justice Project's new report.

The group says 'affordable housing' is not affordable to those who need it most and calls for 2,000 deeply subsidized units every year for ten years in Victoria.

Hey you!

Read this article from karen ward 👇

“Think of it this way: decriminalization (like criminalization) is a process. Social change doesn’t occur instantaneously with an exemption from a section of legislation, that’s ridiculous.”

A clear circumvention of the BC Supreme Court's instruction: policy like this will cause irreparable harm and death to PWUD. BC and Health Canada's recriminalization of public consumption (during housing and drug toxicity crises) is ineffective and dangerous.

“reconciliation and homelessness cannot coexist.”

An important new report is calling for further investments in subsidized housing and the elimination of long-term shelter stays. We have become too reliant on shelters, people need real homes.

Let's talk about how unsafe shelters are for Indigenous woman. 100% of Indigenous woman are vulnerable to violence towards us. I've slept in shelters and felt unsafe that I would be raped or violated if I were to fall into a deep sleep. My belongings were stolen by others 🧵

Residents of CRAB Park sick of waiting for politicians to meet and listen to them have come to the BC Legislature.

Will any MLA come speak with the people whose lives they freely use to score political points? We really hope so.

We are deeply dismayed that recriminalization was accepted. This policy move is not evidence based. It was not developed 'hand in hand' with people with lived experience, or by Indigenous groups like UBCIC, BC First Nations Justice Council, or FNLC.

We will continue to oppose.

The project calls for the end of displacing people when adequate housing isn’t available, along with working with encampment residents to ensure they have basic necessities. Those were also among the calls homelessness advocates made to Victoria council recently.

❤️‍🔥“I’m part of the Housing Justice Project so I can teach people how colonialism causes homelessness.”❤️‍🔥

The report calls for the construction of 2,000 subsidized homes in Greater Victoria annually over the next decade to prevent and end homelessness.
