If the Government views social security payments to people living with mental health problems as ‘unsustainable’, the answer must surely be to address to determinants of mental health and illness, not to restrict the entitlements of those currently struggling

'Weak resourcing undermines policy objectives'. I agree. What's the point of a policy saying we'll deliver care closer to home and keep them out of hospital when the resourcing is going in the opposite direction? kingsfund.org.uk/insight-and-an…

Always good to see SoS engaging with our work. On particular point about comparison with Wales, accuracy is important. When we analyse BSA we look at differences both over time and between groups and write up when those differences are statistically significant. It isn’t. (Contd)

All of the evidence about how to incentivise improvement in health and care would suggest this is a terrible idea. That money could be SO much better spent.

‘Answer to over-crowded hospitals is not more hospitals’
People struggling to access primary/community care risk their condition deteriorating & having to get urgent help from over-stretched hospitals.
How to address this ?

A good summary from The King's Fund in its new report on community services and why this often touted ambition of better community care is always just one long term plan away:

for 40 years, the POINT of NHS reform has been to shift care from acute to not acute; from single illness to multiple illnesses, from hospital focus to community
for 40 years we have basically gone backwards

Interesting article - I’m yet to be convinced that separating ‘on the day’ from ‘complex’ across multiple practices is either possible or sensible.
