Periods and menopause for singers are topics that aren’t discussed openly or enough, bravo Sophie Bevan
Excellent and hugely important piece by Rebecca Franks in The Times about the affects that periods have on opera singers and their voices. It’s so great to see this finally being discussed openly and publicly.
This is the brilliant podcast about the menstrual cycle by India Rakusen that I mentioned in my feature yesterday. Highly recommend listening to it: bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/p…
A fascinating piece by the brilliant Rebecca Franks about the impacts of periods on opera singers and the adjustments they must make because of the physical impact on their voices and bodies.

Big props to Rebecca Franks for opening up this conversation. It's long past time to break this particular taboo.
This is absolutely fascinating and needs more research! Massive kudos to Sophie Bevan for bringing the issue of how menstruation affects women's singing voices into the spotlight -- of interest, Jennifer Gunter ?
“Considering that menstruation is what makes human life possible and about half the world’s population will menstruate at some point, I think [the discussion] is important.” Amen Laura van der Heijden!
My uterus and I were honored to contribute to this piece in The Times and The Sunday Times! 🩸♥️ Thank you Rebecca Franks for creating a space to chat periods re: performing, Sophie Bevan for spearheading the conversation, and Laura van der Heijden for summing it all up…

If you read anything today, please read this by That's Anne with a Plesiosaur. It is SO hard to make a proper income as an author.
And as mentioned in the comments, advances and royalties have not gone up, but cost of living has.
We literally get pennies per book IF our book earns out.
