I worked helping set up Sure Start programmes from 2002 to 2007. It was a privilege to do so. Many of the schemes made a massive difference to their local communities. It was an act of spiteful destruction when the Tories closed them down after 2010, aided by the Lib Dem’s.

Resurrect Sure Start. Remove the two-child cap. Take children out of poverty now and give them hope for the future. That is what governments are for. There is no greater imperative.

The deliberate and cynical destruction of Sure Start stands out - against stiff competition - as one of the worst long-term policy decisions taken by a British government in recent decades.
