It's so wonderful to see the former DSV Limiting Factor, rechristened as Inkfish's Bakunawa, in new livery exploring the deeps of the Pacific Ocean. It was always the intention to get the sub to a great organization that could continue its amazing marine scientific research.

There are currently 2,220 rocket bodies wandering aimlessly in orbit today, European Space Agency told me. From a European perspective, there are 158 Ariane upper-stages still up there. Of those, 100 are from Ariane-5. Thankfully Ariane-6 will de-orbit all stages. bbc.co.uk/news/science-e…

I spent the morning with some top figures in the US Space Force. 'That the first shots in a world war will be fired in space is a given', one of them said. UK politicians must pay far greater attention to the space domain. Read Gabriel Elefteriu FRAeS's new primer. geostrategy.org.uk/research/why-s…

My new paper for Council on Geostrategy, on why matters for the UK -- and, more importantly, HOW to make the case for it. As Jonathan Amos noted, I argue for a DEFENCE-centric view of UK policy. Listing 'all the things space is good for' doesn't cut it.

Well worth a read when it's posted online - Gabriel Elefteriu FRAeS's primer entitled ‘Why space matters to the UK’. The paper argues for a more defence-centric view of UK space policy. Apposite given Sunak's and Starmer's recent defence funding pledges. Council on Geostrategy

Our congratulations to British astronaut, Rosemary Coogan, on getting her “space wings” as
she graduates from her year long basic space training with the European Space agency in Cologne. We wish her the best as now plans for her first mission into space.

NASA has asked for help getting its invaluable rocks back from Mars.

They might have one particular idea in mind: SpaceX's Starship.

I've seen plenty of fossils in limestone cladding (the exterior walls of the BBC's New Broadcasting House is smothered in them), but the fossil in this bathroom tile something else. johnhawks.net/weblog/how-man…

There's been a 🇬🇧 research station on the Brunt Ice Shelf since 1956. It's a precarious place to be. It's produced two monster bergs in recent years, with others likely to follow. Can we get a better handle on what triggers these big calvings? bbc.co.uk/news/science-e…
