The #TRAILS2024 team visited the Classic #Maya center of Uxbenká today! Uxbenka is ~12km SW of Lubaantun but was founded centuries earlier. During survey we collect ceramics for chronology building of the greater Lubaantun community. #NSFstories @KurlyTlapoyawa Alana Pengilley

Last day of survey 🥾 in Toledo for summer 2024! Our #NSF funded survey uses #lidar derived deep learning models to predict the locations of ancient Maya house mounds. We used our previous survey data to build the deep learning model and are now testing the accuracy of the model!

✅ Summer field work in Belize 🇧🇿 complete! I conducted #lidar guided pedestrian survey 🥾 & mapping 📏 at the Classic Maya cities of Uxbenka, Lubaantun, & ancient sites never before documented by archaeologists by Chan Chich. I also excavated house mounds at Ek Xux! #NSFStories

Last week at the Ins't of Archaeology Belize Archaeology Symposium 🇧🇿 I presented on human-environment interactions, adaptations, & #sustainability among Classic Maya cities and modern Maya communities. I use #lidar data to assess differences in social organization in varying landscapes.

I presented preliminary findings from crewed aircraft 🛩️ and drone/UAV #lidar 🛰️ in NW Belize at #EAA2024. I discussed landscape archaeology, challenges of manual pt cloud reclassification, & how these platforms can be used synergistically for archaeological #research ⬇️
