I've written a post about Pterobdellina vernadskyi, a deep sea leech from the icy waters of the Antarctic Seas. This leech can grow to ~ 8 cm long, and it feeds on the blood of Antarctic Toothfish, a fish better known to most people as "Chilean Sea Bass" dailyparasite.blogspot.com/2021/04/pterob…

Do you ever get the feeling that something is watching you? Don’t worry! Tapeworms don’t have eyes. Those are suckers they use to hold on in the gut of their hosts.

Smithsonian NMNH scientist Anna Phillips teamed up with @naturalsciences scientist Bronwyn Williams to describe a new species of crayfish worm: Pterodrilus leiteri. The worm has a symbiotic relationship with crayfish, which means that the two animals help each other survive and thrive.

I've come full circle. A failed undergrad project seemed to be the end of my work with crayfish worms. Then, I met Dr. Bronwyn W. Williams. Dreams can come true and they can start with a little worm with floofies!

Paper out today in PeerJ - the Journal of Life & Environment examining the state of copepod phylogenetics + reviewing phylogenetic, ecological, and taxonomic data on all clades of parasitic copepods. They've evolved to be parasitic 14+ times! Thanks Keith Crandall & Geoff Boxshall peerj.com/articles/12034

Listen in to #Sidedoor defang #leeches. It was so much fun working with Lizzie, James, Josh, Aram, and Roberto! Lizzie did a great job bringing together performance art, history, and natural history through leeches. NMNH Invert Zoology ASP-Parasitologists

“Parasites are puppet masters—they’re this kind of silent force in ecosystems...They might be the majority of biomass in some ecosystems. They might make up the majority of food web links. And we never think about them.” bit.ly/3T8n5AR

Parasite extinction is more complicated than it seems, even to parasitologists. It was really exciting to work with Colin Carlson (the birthday boy) and Emily Driscoll on this video and film in the NMNH Invertebrate Zoology Collections! Smithsonian NMNH NMNH Invert Zoology
