Life with a newborn can be busy but using the everyday moments to interact with your baby really helps them to grow and develop. Enjoying some skin-to-skin time, going out for a walk each day and chatting about what you can see and hear can all be special times to connect.

Most parents give up if they have offered a food 3/4 times without success, but young children may need as many as 10-14 tastings before they will accept an unfamiliar food.

Copying your baby’s expression - smiling, sad, grumpy, excited - helps them to learn about their feelings.

Thinking about how your baby might be feeling & gently mirror this back to them. These are important building blocks for your baby’s social and language development.

Meal times may be messy with babies, but letting them get involved in eating is important. Try to stay relaxed and enjoy meals with your baby, remembering that some days they will eat more, and some days less. Rejecting something you have made especially for them is not personal!

Never add salt (or stock cubes or sauces such as soy sauce or ketchup) to your baby’s food, these can cause damage to your child’s kidneys. The same goes for sugar, which can cause tooth decay - as well as giving your little one a ‘taste’ for sugary, unhealthy foods.

How can I encourage my child to eat vegetables?
Be a good role model. Children copy the behaviour of those around them so if they see their parents and other grown-ups eating lots of vegetables, then they are more likely to follow suit!

Babies need only breastmilk or formula for the first 6 months. If they seem hungrier after 4 months, be aware that giving them solids this early won't help them to sleep better & it’s advisable to give more milk feeds until your child is developmentally ready at around 6 months.

A simple way to encourage children, especially those affected by autism, to avoid mistakes or unacceptable behaviour is to say clearly what we WANT them to do. When we say “don’t do this or that”, the first thing the child does is make a mental picture of the thing we don’t want!
