Our President Susan Murray and Council member Sheekha Saha pay tribute to Janet Hood, a long time former Council member who made an enormous contribution to the work of the Law Society and the profession. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues.

This is a decision Scottish Solicitors Bar Association have reached reluctantly but ScotGov Justice’s inaction over the last 2 years has provoked our action. To quote Aamer Anwar✊🏾🏳️‍🌈#BlackLivesMatter, “there is no justice with a defence”. Mind boggling that ScotGov Justice still don’t acknowledge this reality.

The exodus of defence lawyers has left the criminal bar depleted and stretched beyond breaking point. There is no appetite to address this from either ScotGov Justice or SLAB who have adopted the standard Scottish Government response to a problem: ignore it and hope it goes away.

I am pleased to share the news that this constituent was released from detention on bail. The Home Office acknowledge that the individual is a victim of torture.
