But he warned that despite growing by two new members, the Alliance must continue to adapt 'to face new threats and challenges'. ⬇️🧵
🇳🇴 Anniken Krutnes: “We have to deter Russia.”
“The best thing to do to deter Russia is that they do not win this war, and then we also have to continue to deter them when this war is over,” she tells Fred Kempe.
“That means building the strong force of Ukraine and of Europe.”
🇳🇴 Anniken Krutnes: “We [Europe] cannot replace US military aid.”
But the US is stretched—there are other hotspots in the world, she tells Fred Kempe.
“We have to actually take some responsibilities ourselves in Europe and we are understanding that.”
What more support would you like to get from the US?
“The first answer would be everything,” 🇺🇦 Oksana Markarova tells Fred Kempe at the Atlantic Council.
We are fighting in 800 [kilometers] of an active frontline with Russians attacking us daily, she adds.
🇺🇦 Oksana Markarova: “It will take a village to win this war.”
In order to deter Russia, everyone has to participate, she tells Fred Kempe.
At this point, we need to stop saying: “Europe has to step up,” because Europe did step up a lot, she adds.
🇳🇴 Anniken Krutnes: The supplemental aid to 🇺🇦 Ukraine has to be turned into weapons aid as soon as possible.
The most important thing now is that we don’t stop because of the supplemental aid, she tells Fred Kempe at the Atlantic Council.
“Russia cannot win this war.”
The biggest concern now is more air defense to Ukraine as soon as possible, 🇺🇦 Oksana Markarova tells Fred Kempe at the Atlantic Council.
It’s always cheaper to protect and deter than to fight later or to reconstruct, she adds.
“We’ve been clear since 2008 that 🇺🇦 Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance,” Ambassador Julianne Smith tells Andrew Desiderio.
“We reaffirmed that last year at the Vilnius Summit,” she adds.

Burden sharing will be a big part of what we discuss at the coming NATO Summit and a key feature of the public engagement, Ambassador Julianne Smith tells Andrew Desiderio.
The message of solidarity around what’s happening in 🇺🇦 Ukraine will be a key feature of this summit, she adds.
“We should not give to Russia informal veto power on NATO enlargement,” says 🇱🇹 Lithuanian MOD 🇱🇹’s Laurynas Kasčiūnas at the Atlantic Council.
“No third country should have such kind of blocking right.”
